At the time, the company that I worked with specialized in geo-location and had a data-set of nearly a billion records in MySQL. I was hired to research and develop new tools utilizing MongoDB, which for the geo-queries we were conducting performed 6,000 times faster than MySQL.
We originally set-out to create a WordPress plugin that would enable us to replace MySQL usage with MongoDB, but eventually discovered that it was not possible to do what we needed without forking WordPress. Instead of forking the CMS, we created MongoPress from scratch.
